Powell was (almost) right!

Enoch Powell was a great man. Possibly the greatest politician this country ever had not to become Prime Minister.

Like Winston Churchill before him, he was cast into the political wilderness. He was a vehoment campaigner against immigration and against the erosion of our sovereignty by the Fourth Reich. He was right - almost!

In 1968, he blew his political carreer with his infamous 'Rivers of Blood' speech. Now 43 years later, the general timbre has come to pass. Only this week Britain was branded as a 'safe haven for terrorism'. Let's look at what Powell actually said :

quotation markThere are among the Commonwealth immigrants who have come to live here in the last fifteen years or so, many thousands whose wish and purpose is to be integrated and whose every thought and endeavour is bent in that direction.

But to imagine that such a thing enters the heads of a great and growing majority of immigrants and their descendants is a ludicrous misconception, and a dangerous one.
quotation mark
Powell is right to be concerned. Here, of course, he is talking about Commonwealth immigrants - black in particular, which is where he went wrong.  No-one could have seen the threat from Islamic extremists all those years ago, but he should certainly have seen the insurge from the then Common Market countries as it took in more and more countries. Colour is not the issue; it is culture which is the problem.

He is right that the vast majority of immigrants want to be part of this country and are law abiding. They should be embaced and welcomed - space permitting. But more worryingly he seems to hint at the threat from within that gave rise to the 7/7 attacks in London. Here his foresight is almost miraculous.

He goes on :
quotation mark...we are seeing the growth of positive forces acting against integration, of vested interests in the preservation and sharpening of racial and religious differences, with a view to the exercise of actual domination, first over fellow-immigrants and then over the rest of the population.quotation mark
Well, not so much racial, Enoch, but certainly religious differences have become one of the greatest menaces we have ever had to deal with. Enoch was right about the threat but wrong about the source, but then it is easy to say this from our perspective in his future. Let's close with his most famous words...
quotation markAs I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see "the River Tiber foaming with much blood."quotation mark

Religious sensitivity

There has been a big who-ha in the States over the plans to build the Mohammed Attah Memorial Mosque on the site of the World Trade Centre in New York.

Apparently O'Bummer supports the plans, which only goes to show just how in touch he is with the people of America.

However, our reporter has learnt of similar schemes for Mosques in this country.

Plans are afoot for the building of the Hasib Hussain Islamic Cultural Centre in Tavistock Square, London. Mayor, Boris Johnson, said "The building of this cultural centre will help to heal the wounds between the Christian and Islamic communities following the events of 7th July."

Also in the pipeline north of the border is the building of the Al Megrahi Mosque in Lockerbie to be funded by donations from the Libyan government. The Libyan ambassador commented "We hope this will demonstrate to the Scottish people that we respect them deeply and are very grateful to them for the way they treated Mr Megrahi after he was found irrefutably but falsely guilty of the bombing of PanAm flight 103."

This spirit of co-operation and understanding between the two religions comes as construction starts on the new Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Crusades in Mecca.

All to no (a) veil

Take a good long hard look at the picture on the left and then tell me that it is acceptable to walk into a bank, an airport or a building society dressed like this.

A lot has been said recently about the niqab and the more severe version, the burqa - especially in the light of the recent ruling in France.

I read recently an empassioned blog about the freedom to dress how you like, and another about the freedom of religious expression. I support both these views, but not at the expense of safety and security.

Firstly, lets deal with the religious aspect. On the BBC breakfast programme on Sunday morning, they interviewed an Imam from a London mosque together with an Islamic woman who, although not a veil wearer herself, disagreed with his views. Surprisingly, the Imam was the one opposing the veil. He pointed out at great length that there is nothing in the Koran about the veil but rather it is a tribal or cultural custom. So as far as I can see, there goes the religious argument.

Secondly, let's look at the French law. The law does not mention the burqa. It makes it illegal for anyone to conceal their face in public. It therefore aplies to, for example, anyone wearing a scarfe over their face, a balaclava or a crash helmet. Let us remind ourselves that there is already a law about hoodies on our statute books.

Thirdly, if we reduce this to a cultural thing, then there is no place for it in our culture. If you come to our country, then you deal with our culture. You do not impose your own.

On this basis, I recommend that certain ill informed MPs would oppose a similar law to the French should think again.

Shariah law for the UK?

On Sunday last week, I took a trip to the Globe Theatre in London to see the Scottish play.

Unfortunately, as I drove past the East London Mosque on the Whitechapel Road, I became involved in a traffic jam caused by protestors who had apparently rallied in response to the recently cancelled English Defense League march. Some sort of confrontation was clearly taking place and we were somewhat relieved when we were clear of the area.

However, this has prompted me to reflect on demands for shariah law to be introduced in the UK.

Apparently, this is the law of God and therefore is above the laws of men. Absolute bollocks! This is the law of men represented as being the law of God - not quite the same thing...

Regardless of this, we live in a country which is tolerant of religious views and gives it's people the right to peaceful protest. Note the word 'peaceful'.

In this country we live according to the laws laid down by our democratically elected government and these laws are tried in tested in our courts. By all means exercise your democratic right to campaign to change them and to field candidates for parliament who you can vote for in a general election.

BUT - and this is a big but - at the end of the day, if you do not like the way we do things in this country, then please exercise your democratic right to fuck off and live somewhere else...
