Thorsday.

Really, really looking forward to the Thor movie. But, you're gonna' need some background.

I was an odd kid growing up: I was a voracious reader, a comic nerd, a gamer (AD&D holler), in the choir and jazz band, a pretty successful athlete, a hoodlum who spent a record 54 days of suspension in the 11th grade, an honors student, an amateur designer, and -most oddly- a neophyte proselytizer.

See, I wanted to bring back the gods. The very very old gods from Upsala and Thuringia and the Jutland. Of course, not really. What I wanted to see was a world where people worshipped their own gods, ancestral or geographical (fortunately, Neil Gaiman would write a book about this very concept. And, if I need to tell you the name, then...well, nevermind, I'll let you find it on your own).

So, yeah, renaissance kid borne solely from restlessness and heavy drug use.  But, the last one has really perservered. I am an atheist personally, but I really do still want to see our friends in France and the UK try to restore some of Angelesly's lost druidical lore. I'd have no problems with our Tuetonic neighbors rearing kids on tales of Asgard and the horrors of Niefelheim. And, specifically, I think it'd be a better world without the covetous, pissy hermit god of the desert holding sway in modern Christianity and Judiasm.

So, yea, really pumped for Thor. Let's have some Viking and Pagan Folk Metal, shall we?

Enslaved, Heidevolk, Korpiklaani, Finntroll, c'mon...what else do you need?

Thursday apologizes

Apparently, the posts I pre-drafted never came up yesterday. Including, sadly, the Imbolc greetings to one and all.

Imbolc, or St. Brigit's Day, marks the traditional waxing into spring for neo-druids/neo-pagans, and the like. Halfway between Solstice and the Equinox,  it's a pretty important day, even here in the States.

Huh? Silly superstition, stupid pagan nonsense some would say. True that may be, but why do we still recognize the importance of its arrival in the Western, non-Imbolc sphere?

 Ever heard of Groundhog Day?

Anyway, for my witchy kin and kith, happy Nos Gwyl Fair Imbolc

Tuesday's gotta' do better.

Yesterday may have been one of the least explicable days in my life. 'Real life intrudes' does not do it justice, as Monday turned from merely bad into potentially one of the most stressful days of my adult life.

As usual, Pete & the Bums from Staten Island nail it...
Type O Negative's "I don't wanna' be me (anymore)"

For what it's worth, I still can't believe Peter Steele is dead. His absence has left a void in the music world. Certainly not a hero or a role model (hell, probably not even a decent guy), but he brought something to the table sadly missing --originality and earnestness.
October Rust remains one of my five favorite albums, without a doubt.

Monday didn't walk away...

Speaking of which, can you friggin' believe the Dropkick Murphys were on Conan? I really want to see these guys live, but I'll bet they are dreadful.

Still, great song.

Even punks grow old and grow up.

A story you won't hear from the bigoted Right...

Damn Muzelims gonna' destroy 'Merica an' our Chrishan Nashun...

Quick food for thought today regarding our Jihadi friends in the Middle East, via AhramOnline. Seems that our murderous Muslim friends are up to their old ways...threats of violence against Christians, armed sectarian violence, and human shields.
Except for one very crucial distinction

Egypt’s majority Muslim population stuck to its word Thursday night. What had been a promise of solidarity to the weary Coptic community, was honoured, when thousands of Muslims showed up at Coptic Christmas eve mass services in churches around the country and at candle light vigils held outside.

From the well-known to the unknown, Muslims had offered their bodies as “human shields” for last night’s mass, making a pledge to collectively fight the threat of Islamic militants and towards an Egypt free from sectarian strife.

Copts: Huh? Did we hear that right?

Yes, you read that correctly. Far from decrying religious pluralism, call for a renewed Caliphate and Jihadis arming themselves to the teeth, rather, the Muslim pledge to honor and protect the lives and freedoms of other religious adherents was instead honored in Egypt.

And, not just honored, but protected at the price of their very lives.

This is not about us and them,” said Dalia Mustafa, a student who attended mass at Virgin Mary Church on Maraashly Street. “We are one. This was an attack on Egypt as a whole, and I am standing with the Copts because the only way things will change in this country is if we come together.”

Just when I abandon all faith in humanity, and believe that we will wipe ourselves out in the names of our imaginary friends, I read stories like this

And, for the first time in a long time, the misty-eyed sensation I felt was from hope.

Fair thee well, Geraldine Hoff Doyle

As the old year fades, we look forward to the new day, obviously. However, it is also time to take a moment to think about and honor those not with us for the dawn of 2011. I lost two friends this year, and another with very poor prognosis. Death is just as much a part of life as being born, though.

However, this isn't about personal goodbyes; this is a nationwide farewell to the 86 year old Geraldine Hoff Doyle, who passed away last week. You've never heard of her personally, she was a retired housewife to her dentist husband, Leo Doyle. But, Geraldine was --like so many other women in the War Generation-- invaluable to kindling the can-do spirit of the ladies who made the economic and war engine run.

And, she was a world class beauty to boot...

See Geraldine was working one day at the GE munitions factory in Michigan (her home state), when a young UPI photographer snapped a photo of her, hard at work pressing sheet metal...

I don't understand why men wouldn't want this in the workforce

An in-house graphic artist loved the photo so much that he thought he'd use a stylized version of it, perhaps make it a bit spiffier, to give the ladies at the munitions plant something to be proud of, to be motivated for. What he created, and what Geraldine and others took inspiration from, is as iconic an image of Americana as you will ever see. You, of course, know that painting as Rosie the Riveter.

Yes, yes you could.  And did.

Later adopted as a signpost of feminism, gender equality, GLBT issues and many many others, Rosie's face has graced everything from toilet paper to toothbrushes; tee shirts to torpedoes. But, while it's too often used for movements based upon otherness or issues that are divisive (wrong-headedly, I add), let's think for a moment about what this really was: A time when we really did band together to save humanity from the horrors of true fascism and of true tyranny, and millions upon millions more dead (no matter how loosely we use those words today, we have no idea what the face of evil looks like; our grandfathers saw those faces).

Hubris aside, we owe Rosie, Geraldine and all of the others far more than we ever paid back. Let's start by adding a few words to your dark prayers.

Fairwell, Geraldine Hoff Doyle, the hero to millions of Americans, for more than one generation and more than one cause.
Dead at 86.

Jesus Christ...

...what color were you?

For pure LOL material, I prefer Dane-Jesus up there with the pale blue eyes and strawberry-blonde hair...

With Christmas rapidly approaching, I thought I'd take a minute to talk about Jesus. Let's ignore the fact that there's not even compelling record evidence to suggest that he even lived, as a corporeal person; and let's ignore the fact that he doesn't even arrive in Christian literature until a century after his death; and let's ignore that like about a dozen other virgin-born deities, parthenogenesis isn't possible with human beings; and let's ignore that if Jesus actually existed, he was likely not born in our December.

Let us, instead, think about what Jesus looked like. The above is my favorite one, because a pale, Teutonic Jesus just strips the entire veneer off of what Jesus ethnically was, and where he purportedly was born. Jesus was, if anything, a Jew...a Semitic male from Judea.Gonna' be hard for the Christians to accept this one, but he was meant to fulfill the line of David, to resore the Kingdom, to fulfill the Jewish prophecies and to break up the influence of the priest-class. If nothing, Jesus announced that he was the Messiah of Jewish prophecy.

So? ever seen a Semitic male, born in Palestine or Judea, to a Turkish mom? (Mary was from Ephesus in present-Turkey).

These lovely ladies are Turks...in present-day Ephesus.

...and....
This is a contemporary Semitic man, from the ancestral regions of Judea/Palestine...

So, how did we get the image of Jesus of as a Saxon warrior? I like to think it's a few products, really. One, is pure racism. For the same reason Jesus is always shown painted over in his genital region...a circumsized penis is too Jewish for the Christian class to handle. Another reason, I suppose, is that people want their gods to look like them (except for me...I prefer Cthulu, tentacles and all). Combine these two things: One a desire, and two a white-washing, and you get some odd results...
Crunk Jesus...

Welsh Jesus...

Turko-Grecian Jesus (pretty damned close, probably).

and, what I think is most likely...this forensic reconstruction of a 1st Century Semitic Male....

This is your real jesus. An ethnic Jew of the 1st Century, with unkempt hair, curly beard, etc.  Let's see what the Bible thinks, shall we...RE: the family reunion in heaven.

DAD: His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
SON: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze

So, give our first century guy some white in his hair, and he is God. Take away the white from God's hair, and he is Jesus. Seems perfectly rational, and reasonable to me...Now, get over your pasty Jesus, people, and realize you are worshipping a very ethnic, very provincial desert god of prehistoric extraction. And, if you want, tell him happy birthday this Saturday...

1968 Sixty Minutes on Jesus' appearance. Anachronisms abound in this decidedly whiter America.

Thursday overslept

Again. Normally, out here I never have to set my alarm of doom; I've always woken up as the sky starts to grey and the sun makes its way over Volcano Hualalai. In the Summer that was 5:10. In Fall -so far- it's been around 5:55. The last week, however, the sun's not even making its way over the mountain until abut 6:40.

Far, far too late. So, in that spirit, let's pray for the Solstice, shall we? And an end to the darkening days.

Chalice and Blade's "I hear you calling".
Nope. Not a Wiccan either (or, more precisely a Gardnerian neo-pagan).
But, I do think that if most of Americans were intellectually honest, they'd be a lot more down with some offshoots of European druidical religions or Asatru rather than follow some provincial pissy desert god.

That's a rant for another time, though.

Wednesday needs to talk to his homie in the State Department...

..I need to pull some strings and see if I can get these guys a damned visa. Been on the Haggard mailing list for four years (hey, it helps me bone up my my Germans), and every year at this time I always get the winter email with the dates for the upcoming Summer tour.

Invariably, and this year was no different, it is is always apologetic for the lack of U.S. dates as the lead singer (a German national from Libya) can't enter the country.

Seriously, people. It's the arts. Do the right thing.

Anyway, this is "Full Moon Procession"; not my favorite track, but because I've not heard it lately, I thought I'd share some piccolo grimness.

Monday is looking for a

Hope you and yours had a good holiday, and enjoyed spending time with the boils and ghouls of your choice. Besides spending the last week sleeping for 8 hours a night (unheard of for the last eight years!), I went bodysurfing, swimming, shopping, sight-seeing, cooking, hanging out with the meathead, and all-in-all, just enjoying life.

That said, it was a busy week in the law, particularly for the civil liberty end of things. Let's let old school Anthrax take it away...

Thursday just got off the roller coaster.

So, just woke up from a dream about 15 minutes ago, where my life had been played out like a pilot of a particularly fast, unstable jet; wherein, I was wholly unprepared to deal with pulling the massive G's required to manuever. Nevertheless, I clung to the joystick of the jet in some vain attempt at control.

If that's not a metaphor for life, I'm not sure what is.
The entire dream sequence was set to this, J.S. Bach's "Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor".

Somehow, I think that Stanley Kubrick would have been pleased.

Wednesday dreamed about you...

And, by you, I mean Alien Sex Fiend. One of the legends. I never saw these guys live, and that is a shame. Anyway, enjoy this live rendition of "I walk the line", which, despite the title, is not a cover of Johnny Cash's song of the same.

My suspicion is that the universe would fold in on itself like a microwaved souffle owing to the forces of awesome unleashed by a Johnny Cash/Alien Sex Fiend joint endeavor.

Who wanted Touchdown Jesus dead...

He is risen...
...but, I don't think it counts if he's styrofoam...

Above is pictured the largest Jesus depiction in North America, at a church in Monroe, Ohio. Standing 62 feet, with no pedestal, and carved out of foam, overlayed beneath a frame of steel beams. It doesn't look that big does it? I agree, the semis in the front sort of foreshorten the Christ.

Would you like to see another one? To get the true scope of man's folly here?

Jesus...Lord of the sprinkler system!

However, problems arise when you build a gigantic metal tower, on a flat plain, and then cover it with styrofoam. You can probably predict how this turned out:

A six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ with his arms raised along a highway was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm Monday night and burned to the ground, police said. The "King of Kings" statue, one of southwest Ohio's most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 p.m., Monroe police dispatchers said. The sculpture, 62 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way the arms were raised, similar to a referee signaling a touchdown. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained early Tuesday.

Of course, some might say that this really isn't a simple matter of science. The devout will probably pin the destruction on Satan. They would be closer than they think, because, I have it on good information and belief that the true culprit is....

Thor, the Norse god of warriors, strength, bravery, and the marshall of the storms!

CINCINNATI (MIDGARD)-  Details are sketchy at this time, but Odin-son, Thor, is believed to be the primary culprit of the destruction of the Monroe, OH "Touchdown" Jesus at this time. Police cite the fact that Mjolnir's hammer-shaped impression was found burned in the side of Jesus' face, and anonymous sources within the police department have stated "Look, it got hit by lightning, there's a big ass hammer print, so we know it wasn't Zeus..."

When contacted at his Asgard home, the surly Aesir chose not comment, although, according to eyewitness accounts, he did get smite-y on fellow deity, Heimdall, for letting mortals cross the Bifrost Bridge.

Monroe prosecutors are uncertain about jurisdiction at this time, and one assistant in the office said "look, I'm not going to move venue up there...are you nuts? Besides, Thor may be the strongest, but he's in no way even the nastiest of the Aesir.  Hell, he's a good guy. Have you met his dad?!"

Guess who's NOT on the "most peaceful countries" list?

What the fuck are you looking at?

That's right, the good ole' Yew Ess Aiiiieee is, surprisingly not at the top of the list of the world's most peaceful countries. As you'd expect, it's by and large Northern Europe/Scandinavia (they're at the top of every list dammit!). Also, ahead of the U.S. are such idyllic places like Cuba, China, North Korea, and Luxembourg. America is actually 85th.

In all fairness, those "peaceful" countries are just jealous of our ripped abs and our ability to easily access HGH and high quality tanning supplies...

So, the U.S. can be a rugged place. Like that's a fucking surprise. The country was founded by misfits, criminals, Irish/Scot white slaves indentured servants, brutal slave owners, genocide, colonialism,  manifest destiny, and a preternatural ability to drop trou and flash our package at Ye Ole' Europe while blasting the shit out of them with the 2.3 guns every American is obligated to own.

Just kidding Europe, besides Nazis, we really only do that shit to brown and yellow people.

 Ignore 400 years of this...

But, perhaps the most interesting, although unsurprising, part of the report is that fact that countries with high atheism are among the most peaceful on the planet. However, countries where the theocrats hold sway, tend to be much much more violent. (P < .001). This is a mind-blowing statistical significance. While correlation in no way equals causation, it is at least something to think about when settling down for a good long retirement. At the very least, it should give you pause when looking at those parts of our own nation where there is a church on every corner...

Kill in my name...Kill! Kill! Kill!!!
Muhahahahaaaa....

da Vinci: You never know what's in the attic

This is one of the coolest things I've read (or seen) in quite a while; and, in a world apparently gone seriously haywire lately, we all could use a little good news, eh?

Per the Montreal Gazette (and, A Blog About History):

A dozen of scientists and David Bershad, an art history professor at St. Mary’s University College, agree. The image of a man with blue eyes, long greying hair and a moustache appears to be a self-portrait of the renowned Renaissance artist, inventor and thinker.
Coming to that conclusion brought together da Vinci’s own passions for art and science as experts used fingerprint analysis, carbon dating and even facial reconstruction software to answer three key questions:
  • Does the painting date from the right time period?
  • Is it a portrait of da Vinci?
  • And, was it painted by the master himself?
“I believe it’s a Leonardo,” Bershad said Tuesday, the day after returning from Italy, where he was able to look at the portrait in person. “It’s exciting to come to that conclusion.”
Bershad was the lone art historian — and sole North American — asked to help assess the authenticity of the portrait, which was discovered in 2009 by a medieval historian studying the art collection of a family in Acerenza, a town in southern Italy.

Now, do you want to see what the Master looked like? The face behind the consummate artist, scientist, tinkerer and the person who gave us the "Renaissance Man"?

Perhaps the smartest man to ever live...and this is what he thought he saw in the mirror.

R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

As he lay dying, Voltaire was asked to renounce Satan. Voltaire, to his ever-loving credit and wit, told the Chaplain "Now, Now, this is no time to be making enemies".
RIP Dio.

This Sunday, early in the morning, metal legend Ronnie James Dio passed away at the age of 67, after a long struggle with cancer. Fortunately, he was able to say goodbye to his friends and family, and slip off to the sunless lands in the comfort of his home. A staple of rock n' roll with Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell, and Elf, Dio popularized the horned hands in metal music. He will be missed.

Dio's "Holy Diver". A classic, and the benchmark of Dio's solo career.

Why Monty Python will always be cooler than you...

I truly believe that there are no sacred cows. The best way to confront life's uncertainties, or certainties -as the case may be, is to mock them: religion, poverty, classism, medical conditions, racism, sexism, geopolitical strife, evil, inhumanity, crimes, etc...the first step to defusing these little bombs in our midst is to mock them.

Like this...

Bestiality + death = comedy

However, very few people before or since, have made such guileless fun out of our quirks like the guys in Monty Python. When Graham Chapman passed away in 1989, at the too-early age of 48, John Cleese and Eric Idle could have given him a proper, expected send-off. Instead, they eulogized him the way that Chapman deserved, and how we all should go out: smiling through the tears.

See, Death is funny...as long as you look on the bright side of life
