Wedding from Hell: Surviving Tsunamis

Just another day in the neighborhood.

Good god. Let's never do that again, shall we? I am about to weave you a tale that would make the children from Lemony Persnicket's "Unfortunate Events" gnash their teeth in anxiety. Putting it shortly, everything was a freakin' abomination of Biblical proportions.

In that "wrath of god" way, let's talk about the biggest calamity, and one that's not terrible humorous: Japan's 9.0 earthquake off the Sendai Coast, in the Honshu Prefecture. If you think 9.0 sounds pretty massive, that's because it is...It is the 4th largest earthquake in recorded history: And, because of the algorithm used, it actually winds up being about 1000 times more powerful than the ones that struck Kobe and Haiti. And that ignores the hundreds of magnitude 5-6.6 quakes that were started all along the Ring of Fire...

Hundreds....Everywhere.

Surrounded by water, and unstable earth for thousands of miles.

And, as the people of the Pacific Rim could tell you, yours truly included, this wasn't even the worst of what was to come...No, the worst --for that day, at least-- was the massive tsunami that was spawned. A tsunami isn't like a beach wave, that undulates in gently and floods everything...It's a buckling of the sea floor, which raises the water level by tens and dozens of feet. When you live near the coast, all it takes is 2-4 feet to flood you out. Japan got hit by an immediate 30 foot wall of water, killing tens of thousands and causing tens of billions of dollars of damage....

And it was without warning....

Sure, you say, that's Japan...What does that Island archipelago have to do with Hawaii, which is 2000 miles away? Let me answer that with this observation. We, like Japan, are on a fault line; with our shores being simply seafloor ramps from the earth's bottom. That makes any sort of rise in the water level potentially deadly. And, since we largely live on the coasts, it makes any tsunami damage potentially crippling.

There's also the matter that Tsunami energy travels thousands of miles, largely unimpeded.

Note the Purple area of tsunami energy: It's half the size of Australia...

I'll spare you my evacuation details: Suffice it to say, I spent a sleepless night, with a dozen people from my wedding party, getting drunk in my office. After the dawn arose, we moved to a "tent city" further up the hill. The scariest part, as the tsunami is blasting us with 8-12 walls of water, you can't hear a thing...dead silence except for the sound of waves and water crashing that you normally here.

But it wasn't just a little splashing: It was an inundation along the West Coast. 53 homes destroyed, 1 swept off to sea, dozens of businesses and resorts damaged/destroyed, hundreds of people out of work, and $300 million dollars worth of damage in toll.

And this was a "small tsunami"

This guy is a dumbass, but I'm glad he was...

You can get an idea of what 8-12 feet of water coming at you looks like.

...and it went on for hours...

This says nothing of the irradiation coming our way via the trade winds, Japanese refugees, destroyed economies, and a week of dangerous surf, dangerous critters and god-knows-what washing up on the shores of Paradise.

But, one of the saddest things is that Pu'uhonua o' Honaunau, the City of Refuge, was destroyed (yes, where I was going to be married two days later). For two thousand years, this was a place of asylum for those who violated the caste system, committed taboo (kapu) acts, or were displaced survivors of war. If you made it to the city, you were granted clemency, if not then, like so many other acts in Hawaii at the time, you were killed.

We don't have pictures yet, but my understanding is that the Great Wall has been completely destroyed, the ancient canoe village washed out to sea, the great temple (heiau) damaged, and myriad human remains swept away and uncovered after hundreds of years of rest.

No word on the tikis...

Thus, while we were comparatively lucky, all is not right in paradise. And it's a damn shame. But, not a single person died here, and for that, we are even more fortunate.

Another Sunday, another bloody interfering priest...

This is Cardinal Keith O'Brien, yet another Catholic who thinks that being a Papist entitles him to stick his nose into politics and tell the governement what to do. The Cardinal accused the Foreign Secretary of doubling overseas aid to Pakistan to more than £445 million without demanding religious freedom for Christians and other religious minorities, such as Shia Muslims.

He claimed that three-quarters of all religious persecution in the world is now directed at Christians, resulting in a collapse in the number of followers in some Middle East countries. On the other hand of course, it could just be that they simply don't like what you are peddling?

He went on to say "In countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, Christians face violence, intolerance and even death because of their beliefs.” Hardly surprising as they are not Christian countries and have put up with centuries of Catholic missionaries trying to show them the error of their ways. Perhaps I should mention the Crusades at this point?

I support freedom of worship - provided it doesn't include you ramming your views down my throat - but it's not right to use aid to enforce it in other countries.

The church is the church. The government is the government. Our government does not insist on people holding specific views in the UK and it is quite wrong to use aid money to blackmail other countries' governments into doing things our way.

19 de Março - Dia de São José

O culto a São José começou provavelmente no Egito, passando mais tarde para o Ocidente,
onde hoje alcança grande popularidade.
Em 1870, o papa Pio IX o proclamou "O Patrono da Igreja Universal" e,
a partir de então, passou a ser cultuado no dia 19 de março.

Em 1955 Pio XII fixou o dia 1º de maio para "São José Operário, o trabalhador".

Apesar de ter grande importância dentro da Igreja Católica, o nome de São José
não é muito citado dentro das fontes bibliográficas da Igreja, sendo apenas mencionado nos
Evangelhos de S. Lucas e S. Mateus.

Descendente de Davi, São José era carpinteiro na Galiléia e comprometido com Maria.
Segundo a tradição popular, a mão de Maria era aspirada por muitos pretendentes, porém,
foi a José que ela foi concedida.

Quando Maria recebeu a anunciação do anjo Gabriel de que daria à luz ao Menino Jesus,
José ficou bastante confuso porque apesar de não ter tomado parte na gravidez,
confiava na fidelidade dela. Resolveu, então, terminar o noivado e deixá-la secretamente,
sem comentar nada com ninguém. Porém, em um sonho, um anjo lhe apareceu e
contou que o Menino era Filho de Deus e que ele deveria manter o casamento.

José esteve ao lado de Maria em todos os momentos, principalmente na hora do parto,
que aconteceu em um estábulo, em Belém.

Quando Jesus tinha dois anos, José foi novamente avisado por um anjo que deveria fugir
de Belém para o Egito, porque todas as crianças do sexo masculino estavam sendo
exterminadas, por ordem de Herodes.

José, Maria e Jesus fugiram para o Egito e permaneceram lá até que um anjo avisasse
da morte de Herodes.

Temendo um sucessor do tirano, José levou a familia para Nazaré, uma cidade da Galiléia.

Outro momento da vida de Cristo em que José aparece na condição de Seu guardião foi na
celebração da Páscoa Judaica, em Jerusalém, quando Jesus tina 12 anos.

Em companhia de muitos de seus vizinhos, José e Maria voltavam para a Galiléia com a
certeza de que Jesus estava no meio do grupo.

Ao chegar a noite e não terem notícias de seu filho, regressaram para Jerusalém em uma
busca que durou 3 dias.

Para a surpresa do casal, Jesus foi encontrado no templo em meio aos doutores da lei
mais eruditos, explicando coisas que o deixavam admirados.

Apesar da grande importância de José na vida de Jesus Cristo não há referências da data
de sua morte.

Acredita-se que José tenha morrido antes da crucificação de Cristo, quando
este tinha 30 anos.

Red Nose, my arse!

Yes, it's Red Nose Day and as you might gather from the picture above, I am not a fan.

Frankly, the whole thing leaves me cold. Not only am I suffering from charity overload (Christchurch appeal, Japan, etc etc) but I just don't find it funny. Last year I wrote a piece called "Are you 'avin' a larf?" about the declines in comedy. I've not changed my views.

Tonight we will be subjected to yet another load of purile crap on the telly urging us to give our hard earned dosh away to a load of third world dictators all in the name of helping people whose own governments are too corrupt to help them in the first place.

As we have seen from the uprisings in northern Africa lately, people are at last beginning to realise what has been going on and have had enough of it. This, in my view, has got to be a good thing for the local populations. Far better, anyway, than being patronised by a bunch of so called funny people.

On a personal note, a few years ago I was doing a contract job for the Post Office. On Red Nose Day, I was accosted by a bunch of the permanent staff - who should have been working? - standing outside the entrance to the offices and refusing to let anyone in who did not put £5 in their bucket.

I told them to fuck off then, and I will be doing the same today...

These are Olympic Medals and in less than 500 days the monumentally pointless waste of public money known as the 2012 London Olympics will be under way. So what better way to prove that 13 years of Labour misrule have taught us bugger all, than to set some targets?

Apparently targets are good. Targets enable us to measure performance and to ensure that we are getting value for money. At the last count the Olympics are costing us, the taxpayer, £9,300,000,000 for the venue alone. That's £155 per person. They took mine. I was never asked.

And have you seen the Soviet style accomodation blocks they reckon are going to end up as desirable housing!??!

But let's not go there...

Instead, let's look at the targets. Sport UK says they are setting a target of 31-60 medals for the main games. UK Sport says that £100,000,000 has been 'invested' in our athletes with 2012 in mind. This puts us in the top 3 sports 'investors' in the world. So here's some simple maths. If we get 60 medals - which I find find frankly unlikely - then each medal will have cost every single person in Britain an 'investment' of £1.65.

Frankly, I'd rather invest mine in a cup of coffee...

Recém-nascido é encontrado em saco plástico no Pará

Um recém-nascido foi encontrado dentro de um saco plástico, na tarde desta terça-feira (15), em Ananindeua (PA). Segundo a Polícia Civil, o bebê estava em uma área de matagal, e foi localizado por moradores de um conjunto residencial da região.

O bebê, que ainda estava com a placenta e o cordão umbilical, foi encaminhado a um hospital, onde recebe atendimento.

“Ele tem um hematoma na cabeça, algumas picadas de insetos, mas passa bem”, diz aoG1 a conselheira tutelar Andrea Nascimento.

Assim que receber alta, segundo Andrea, a criança será encaminhada a um abrigo. A polícia investiga a identidade da mãe da criança, mas ainda não há suspeitas.
